Denis Shapovalov retires from the US Open.
The Richmond Hill, Ont., tennis player made the announcement on social media on Wednesday.
Shapovalov said he had done everything he could to get healthy in time for the Grand Slam tournament, but needed more time to recover from a knee injury.
The 24-year-old had withdrawn from the recent National Bank Open in Toronto due to the same injury.
Shapovalov, who currently occupies the 22nde world rank, has not played since Wimbledon, when he lost in four sets to Roman Safiullin on July 3.
It’s unclear if Shapovalov will be able to return for the Davis Cup in Bologna, Italy, where Canada are the defending champions. The tournament will take place from September 12 to 17.
