Former World No. 1 at the US Open
Number one in the old world Simona Aleppo The US Open will not play in 2023. Romanian was automatically removed from the main draw list as he was still suspended for an anti-doping rule violation.
American Taylor Townsend will take Aleppo’s place in the main draw.
Note that the Romanian tennis player played her last match in the first round at the US Open last year, losing to Ukraine’s Daria Snigur in a sensational way.
In August 2022, Aleppo passed a doping test during the US Open. The illicit drug roxadustat was found in sample A. The 31-year-old tennis player wanted to check sample B, but this only confirmed a violation of the rules.
In December, the Romanian Court of Arbitration for Sport concluded that roxadustat had entered Aleppo’s body through a contaminated dietary supplement. Hearings in the case continue.
