United States international Gabriela Dabrowski advances to second round in women’s doubles

(New York) Ottawa’s Gabriela Dabrowski and her New Zealand playing partner Erin Routliffe advanced to the first round of the US Open in women’s doubles on Thursday.

Dabrowski and Routliffe, 16^are seeds, defeated American Lauren Davis and Czech Anastasia Detiuc 4-6, 6-1, 6-0 in one hour 36 minutes of play.

The winners hammered 34 winners against 25 unforced errors, while the losers hit 20 winners and committed 32 unforced errors.

Dabrowski and Routliffe broke their opponents’ serve eight times in 17 break opportunities. Davis and Detiuc were 4-for-7 in a broken situation.

In the second round, Dabrowski and Routliffe will face Taiwan’s Fang-Hsien Wu and China’s Lin Zhu. The latter beat Briton Katie Boulter and Kazakh Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-3.

Russian tennis player Andrei Rublev told how the presence of former world number one Marat Safin on the coaching staff influences him, and also admitted that he knows nothing about his next opponent in the Australian Open bracket.

In the first round match of the Australian Open, Rublev beat Italian representative Matteo Arnaldi with a score of 6:4, 6:2, 6:3. In the second round, the Russian will meet with the Portuguese Jaime Faria.

Australian Open Medvedev qualified in three sets for the 2nd round

(Melbourne) Russian Daniil Medvedev, 12^e world champion and three-time finalist in Melbourne, qualified on Monday for the second round of the 2026 edition of the Australian Open by beating the Dutchman Jesper De Jong (73^e) 7-5, 6-2, 7-6 (7/2).

“At times I could have been more clinical, so I hope I will be in the next few rounds,” he commented.

He played in Melbourne in the 2021, 2022 and 2024 finals but last year, as a prelude to a missed season, he lost in the second round against the American Learner Tien, then from qualifying but seeded N.25 this year.

This time, the winner of the United States Open in 2021 and former world No.1 will face Frenchman Quentin Halys (83^e) to try to advance to the third round.

“Last year was not my best season. But now, I’m playing better and better, so we’ll see,” commented Medvedev.

He is still undefeated this year after his title earlier this month in Brisbane where he reeled off five victories to earn his 22^e title in so many different tournaments.

First loss of the top 10: The eighth ATP number ended the match at the Aus Open early

Canadian tennis player Felix Auger-Aliassime (ATP 8) finished competing at the 2026 Australian Open.

He went to court against the Canadian player in the first round. Nuno Borgesha (Portugal, ATP 46). After three sets, Auger refused to continue the match and the match ended after 2 hours and 16 minutes.
