“Can you shut up?” Medvedev staged a one-man show at the US Open

Daniil ridiculed the opponent’s health problems and yelled at the fans.

Daniil Medvedev’s path to another Grand Slam title is getting more difficult. In the first round of the US Open, the Russian smashed Attila Balazs to smithereens, giving him only two games, but Christopher O’Connell turned out to be a more serious opponent. Daniil had to give all his best, and there were some breakdowns on the court.

Medvedev was literally furious!

Two wins out of two

Australian O’Connell started the US Open with a difficult win over compatriot Max Purcell. Their match lasted almost three hours, and Christopher was able to snatch victory only on a tie-break in the fourth set.

Previously, O’Connell and Medvedev played each other twice in official tournaments. Their first meeting took place three years ago – interestingly, also in the second round of the US Open. Then Daniel took over in the minimum possible three sets. Another match took place six months ago in the quarterfinals of the ATP 250 tournament in Doha – there Medvedev won again, but with great difficulty.

Of course, Christopher hoped for revenge. But objectively it was hard for him to resist the third racket of the world. Yes, and Daniel himself understood that no one would forgive him for a knockout in the second round.

Confident start

The mood of the Russian was visible from the first minutes. Even the public, which actively supported O’Connell, did not interfere with him. Break Australian in the second game also did not bother Daniil. He held his serve confidently and looked great at the reception. As a result – 6:2 in the first set.

The second game also took place under Medvedev’s dictation. O’Connell took the same two games, but this time without a break. It was clear that it was extremely uncomfortable for him to play with such Daniel. The Russian did not experience any problems and calmly took the second set – 6:2.

Small miracle

Before the start of the third installment, the Australian took a short medical break. True, at first this did not help him in any way: Medvedev led 4:2 and was preparing to celebrate another easy victory on the New York courts. But it turned out not to be so simple.

In the middle of the third set, O’Connell unexpectedly stepped up and almost stopped making mistakes. The sharp transformation of the opponent confused Medvedev, who out of the blue gave three games in a row. The match became more viscous and tense, and the Australian performed a small miracle by moving the set to a tie-break and winning it – 7:6 (8:6).

“Symptoms? I lost the set”

Of course, Medvedev was extremely dissatisfied with this alignment. Especially when you consider that he missed two match points. At that moment, he remembered that the Australian used the help of a doctor, and decided to make fun of it.

Daniel called the doctor to the court and demanded to give him the same medicine that Christopher had. The doctor explained that the opponent was having trouble breathing. Medvedev said that it was also difficult for him to breathe. What followed was a non-trivial dialogue.

“Are you really sick?” the doctor asked Medvedev.

– No. But I want to be in the same conditions as him,” the tennis player replied.

– Do you have symptoms? — said the doctor.

– Eat. I lost the set,” Medvedev joked.

Of course, he didn’t need any help. The Russian in this way decided to relieve tension and anger from the lost set.

“Are you dumb or not?”

In the fourth set, Medvedev had another irritant. He was hampered by two fans who were shouting at the Russian’s serve. At some point, Daniel could not stand it.

– Hey, can you shut up? Are you stupid? Dumb or not? the tennis player shouted at the fans.

The referee of the meeting sided with Medvedev and asked the audience not to make noise. Daniel, in his ironic manner, commented on the request of the judge.

– At least listen to him. You don’t listen to anyone,” the Russian said.

Anniversary victory

However, in the fourth set, Medvedev returned to his usual killer mode. He was not even hindered by another medical break, which O’Connell took advantage of. Moreover, the pause was without pills and absolutely on business: trying to play at the net, the Australian tore his leg to blood.

Medvedev was in complete control of the set. The hassle in the third installment was only a temporary clouding. Daniel calmly won with a score of 6:2 and stepped into the third round. This victory, by the way, was his 250th on hard in his career.

Now Christopher O’Connell can focus on improving his health. But Medvedev has no time to relax: his next opponent is Sebastian Baez from Argentina.

US Open is the first trophy of 2019. Andreescu became 35K champion in the USA

25-year-old Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu (WTA 228) became the champion of the ITF W35 challenging tournament in Bradenton (USA), where she was the first seed.

On the way to the Cup, Bianca lost only one set and passed: Malkia Ngunue (USA), Tatiana Peri (Italy, WTA 350), Ella MacDonald (Great Britain, WTA 527), Li Ma (USA, WTA 342) and Vivian Wolff (USA, WTA 330).

This was Andreescu’s first trophy since her US Open title in 2019. Bianca skipped the first major of the season, the Australian Open 2026, to make a smooth return to the Tour and get into physical shape.

Andreescu, who has had back problems for a long time, sprained her ankle at a tournament in Montreal at the end of July 2025. After the Canadian’s thousandth, Bianca made five appearances and four defeats before the end of 2025.

What will the season be? Sports doctor commented on Kostyuk’s injury

What will the season be? Sports doctor commented on Kostyuk’s injury

sports doctor Dmitry Babelyuk He commented on the injury of the Ukrainian tennis player Marty Kostyuk:

“The video shows how the supporting leg bends when the weight is transferred to it. Martha managed to sense the danger and balance her body so that the “galik” was not completely exposed, but this small rotation still caused discomfort.

Anyone familiar with tennis knows how important footwork and especially sudden changes in movement are in tennis. For this reason, ankles are the most common problem tennis players encounter after elbows.

We remember Elina’s season with a brace and then surgery. This is also a common problem in men’s tennis.

The fact that Marta was able to continue playing shows that her injury is not serious, so it is definitely too early to bury this season. It is important now to recover well and be fully prepared for the next Slam.

Predictably, only one ligament was torn. Not a strong enough twist to tear all three, which happens all too often, but a strong enough twist to tear a ligament, forcing you to finish the tournament.

Marta is leaving JSC and will recover to prepare for the next tournament. “The injury is not serious enough to put the season in doubt.”

ALCARAZ: “The level he showed was a little unexpected for me”

Leader in ATP world rankings Carlos Alcaraz He held a press conference after defeating Adam Walton in the first round of the 2026 Australian Open:

– Carlos, congratulations on the successful start of the tournament. How would you evaluate today’s match? Frankly, the second set was tense, but in the end did you get through it without any losses?

– I can say that it was a difficult match for me. In the first set, everything was decided by a break. He made a few mistakes on his first serve. He also played very well, very reliably, and I think he was constantly trying to find a position to attack as much as possible.

In the second set, he started to find more space for aggressive play. In general, I played good tennis, but in one of the games I lost my concentration a little – mostly when I was fighting with myself, and after that everything became more difficult.

But overall I am satisfied. To be honest, I was ready for a serious battle. Although the level it showed was a bit of a surprise to me. I had to pull myself together and be ready for this battle. I’m happy with the first match of the season and the level I was able to show.

– Carlos, congratulations. What are you most pleased with today and what do you think needs to be improved to go far again in the tournament group?

“I think I hit the ball well.” Of course it could have been played better. But I’m glad I did everything I had to do. I acted correctly in terms of behavior and mental attitude on the field. I always had a good attitude, always tried to think positively. I think I did a good job with that and that was one of the main goals of this match.

In terms of tactics and the level of play in general, I understand that there are many aspects that need to be improved for the next round if I want to go further.

– Carlos, for many the quarter-finals are an excellent result, but you have not yet progressed further in this tournament. Do you have an explanation for why you performed less well than others at this Grand Slam?

– Yes, this is a little difficult for me to explain. It’s strange that I haven’t made it past the quarter-finals in Australia yet because I think I’m playing good tennis here. I played very well here for the last two years, but lost to Isner and Djokovic in the quarter-finals. If you are the first or second racket in the world, let’s say these are not the most ordinary opponents at this stage.

This is not an excuse, but I really want to do better than previous years. I have a feeling that this season I might have a chance to go further.
