United States international Carlos Alcaraz reaches the fourth round

(New York) Although Carlos Alcaraz was not perfect in his victory in the third round of the United States Open, the defending champion did what was necessary and even made himself smile on Saturday, in addition to frustrating Dan Evans to the point where he threw his racquet a few times.

Less than 12 hours after the man everyone expects him to face in the final next weekend, Novak Djokovic, erased a two-set deficit to win, Alcaraz reached the fourth round at Flushing Meadows for the third year in a row. He beat Evans, 26e seeded, 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.

Alcaraz, world No. 1, demonstrated his versatility by hitting different spectacular shots.

“We play to make people happy, or at least entertain them. It’s good when the show is good,” said Alcaraz, who won his second Grand Slam title in July by beating Djokovic in the final at Wimbledon.

The 20-year-old Spaniard is seeking to become the first man to win a second straight title in New York since Roger Federer’s five straight triumphs from 2004 to 2008.

I would like to be part of the history of the tournament like Roger. It’s my aim.

In the fourth round, Alcaraz will face Matteo Arnaldi, a 22-year-old Italian who occupies the 61e world rank. Arnaldi, who had won just one Grand Slam match before arriving in New York, reached the fourth round with a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 win over Britain’s Cameron Norrie.

In other matches at the start of the day on Saturday, Briton Jack Draper, 123e in the world, also reached the round of 16 with a 6-4, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 victory over American guest Michael Mmoh.

Later, No. 6 Jannik Sinner of Italy defeated Swiss veteran Stan Wawrinka 6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, while No. 8 Russian Andrey Rublev beat Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, 7-5.

Aryna Sabalenka

On the women’s side, No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka continued her run with a crushing 6-1, 6-1 win over France’s Clara Burel. Sabalenka could snatch No. 1 in the world from Iga Swiatek depending on their results in New York.

Sabalenka, who won the Australian Open in January, has lost just 12 games in three matches so far at the Billie Jean King Tennis Centre.

In the next round, Sabalenka will face No. 13 Daria Kasatkina, who defeated Belgium’s Greet Minnen 6-3, 6-4.

Meanwhile, No. 3 Jessica Pegula defeated Ukraine’s Elina Svitolina 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 to set the stage for a duel against fellow American Madison Keys.

Jessica Pegula

Pegula hopes to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in a Grand Slam. She will first have to beat the runner-up in New York in 2017, who also needed three sets to reach the round of 16.

Keys, No. 17, defeated Liudmila Samsonova, No. 14, 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.

Pegula was consistently challenged by No. 26 Svitolina. She won the last four games, however, to complete the semi-finalist at the 2019 US Open.

In the late afternoon, China’s Qinwen Zheng, No. 23, defeated Italy’s Lucia Bronzetti 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.

Australian Open Gauff in the 2nd round without trembling

(Melbourne) American Coco Gauff, 3e world, passed the first round of the Australian Open without difficulty on Monday, dismissing Uzbek Kamilla Rakhimova (93e) 6-2, 6-3.

“I tried not to put pressure on myself. I’m here to win the tournament. I will only be happy if I win the title,” commented the 21-year-old.

Gauff, who reached the semi-finals last year in Melbourne, his best result, will face in 2e Serbian left-hander Olga Danilovic (69)e).

“I trained against a left-hander, Alexandra Eala, because there aren’t many left-handers on the circuit. It’s going to be a tough game, but I’m looking forward to it,” Gauff said.

Winner of the US Open 2023 and Roland-Garros 2025, she served for the match at 5-2 but was unable to finish. She did so in the next game by taking Rakhimova’s serve for the sixth time.

“I would have preferred to end a game earlier on my serve, but we have many chances to break here,” Gauff emphasized.

US Open is the first trophy of 2019. Andreescu became 35K champion in the USA

25-year-old Canadian tennis player Bianca Andreescu (WTA 228) became the champion of the ITF W35 challenging tournament in Bradenton (USA), where she was the first seed.

On the way to the Cup, Bianca lost only one set and passed: Malkia Ngunue (USA), Tatiana Peri (Italy, WTA 350), Ella MacDonald (Great Britain, WTA 527), Li Ma (USA, WTA 342) and Vivian Wolff (USA, WTA 330).

This was Andreescu’s first trophy since her US Open title in 2019. Bianca skipped the first major of the season, the Australian Open 2026, to make a smooth return to the Tour and get into physical shape.

Andreescu, who has had back problems for a long time, sprained her ankle at a tournament in Montreal at the end of July 2025. After the Canadian’s thousandth, Bianca made five appearances and four defeats before the end of 2025.
