Former world number one Maria Sharapova took part in a conference on gender equality in sports held in Canada, where she spoke out about the unfair distribution of prize money in tennis between men and women.
— Yes, 15-20 percent of the tour is equal. But where are the other 80 percent? It’s not even close to equal. Unfortunately, conferences like this don’t get much media attention, they don’t have visibility, so the topic of equality doesn’t even get a platform. Many people in the world do not even know that such events exist, – the official website of the Canadian Tennis Federation quotes Sharapova.
Throughout her career, the Russian has won five Grand Slam tournaments, the total number of titles won under the auspices of the WTA has reached 36.
