Honored coach of Russia Viktor Yanchuk told what tactics Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev should follow in order to beat Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the semifinals of the US Open.
“I believe that this match will be an incredible test for Daniil. Alcaraz is a phenomenon in the world of tennis. Carlos is capable of being anywhere and is ready for lightning-fast responses to his opponent. It’s incredibly difficult to compete with him in this. To create a sensation, Daniil must reach the peak of his form in this match and try to force Alcaraz to fight in the first two sets.
As talented as Carlos is, he can be made to make mistakes. In the match with Zverev, this was especially noticeable in their third set, when Zverev began to lead, but he did not have enough physical strength and skill to put the finishing touches on Alcaraz. It will be extremely important for Daniil to play on his opponent’s weaknesses, correctly draw him into the confrontation and bring him to a state of fatigue and frequent mistakes. If he can do this, he will have some hope for a favorable outcome. So far, I consider Alcaraz the clear favorite in the match with Medvedev,” Yanchuk told RT.
Seeded third, Medvedev will play world No. 1 Alcaraz in the US Open semifinals, tentatively starting at 2:00 Moscow time on Saturday.
Alcaraz and Medvedev have played each other three times, two of them in 2023. In March, in the final of the Masters in Indian Wells, the Spaniard won with a score of 2-0, in July, in the semi-final of Wimbledon, he again won with a clean sheet – 3-0. At Wimbledon 2021, Medvedev was stronger than Alcaraz in three games.
