“On paper Alcaraz is the clear favorite, but Medvedev is in very good shape” – Vesnina

Olympic champion Elena Vesnina shared her expectations from the semifinal match of the US Open between Russian Daniil Medvedev and Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

— Probably, on paper, Alcaraz can be called the clear favorite in the match with Medvedev. Carlos won their last two head-to-head matches. But now the situation is completely different. Medvedev is in very good shape. He had great matches with de Minaur and Rublev. Andrey caused a lot of problems, but Danya left no chance. All his matches are very stable and even, without declines. I am sure that Medvedev will draw conclusions from the latest defeats in the matches with Alcaraz. I think we will have a very strong fight in this semi-final. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a five-setter,” Championship quotes Vesnina.

The approximate start of the game is at 2:00 Moscow time on Saturday. American Ben Shelton and Serbian Novak Djokovic will play in the other Grand Slam semi-final.

Alcaraz and Medvedev have played each other three times, two of them in 2023. In March, the Spaniard won the Masters final in Indian Wells with a score of 2–0; in July, in the semifinals of Wimbledon, he again won with a clean sheet – 3–0. At Wimbledon 2021, Medvedev was stronger than Alcaraz in three games.
