Rohan Bopanna showed good sportsmanship in the US Open final
Indian tennis player in the US Open 2023 doubles final Rohan Bopanna He showed an example of sportsmanship after the referee’s mistake in the third set.
While the score was 2:4, Bopanna’s teammate Matthew Ebden threw a cross and hit the Indian player’s right elbow, and the ball bounced into the net, giving Bopanna and Ebden a point. The referee did not notice the touch, but Bopanna reported it himself and abandoned the rally.
“When Matt shot the ball hit my elbow. I don’t think anyone saw it, so I reported it myself. I’ve been like that my whole career and I think if something’s wrong, no matter what the score is or what happens in the game, if it’s wrong, it’s wrong. I immediately went to the referee and told him that the ball hit me. I think he didn’t immediately realize what was happening either,” Bopanna said.
“I was the only person in the stadium who saw the touch because I was right behind you. So I saw the ball bounce a little bit,” Ebden added.
Recall that Joe Salisbury and Rajeev Ram were the first tennis players in the Open Era to win the US Open three consecutive times in over a century.
