At the age of 19, Coco Gauff defeated, at home, the one who will take first place in the world next week. In the final of the United States Open on Saturday, the American got the better of Aryna Sabalenka in three sets of 2-6, 6-3 and 6-2.
Despite a start to the match during which her racket seemed broken, Coco Gauff not only won the last grand slam tournament of the season, but also her first career major title.
To achieve this, she had to shake Sabalenka and push her back to her limits. At the end of her solutions, the Belarusian fought herself, in a way. And this, even if Gauff was calm, solid and fair.
The fact remains that Sabalenka was the favorite and she crashed, with unforced errors.
On the other hand, Gauff improved throughout this final, stifling every threat from her rival.
Ultimately, she became a grand slam champion during this match.
More details will follow.
