Goff: “Thank you to the people who didn’t believe in me”
In her statements after winning the US Open, Coco Goff referred to the haters who motivated her, but also to the contribution of Venus and Serena Williams.
Coco Goff celebrated the first Grand Slam of her career when she defeated Aryna Sabalenka 2-1 sets (2-6, 6-3, 6-2) in the US Open final.
The 19-year-old great athlete spoke about the haters that motivated her during the awards ceremony: “Thank you to the people who didn’t believe in me. A month ago I won a 500 tournament and people said I was quitting. Two weeks later I won a 1000 tournament and people said that was the best thing I would ever do. Three weeks later, here I am with this trophy (US Open).
I tried my best to hold this trophy with pride. Frankly, those who thought they were pouring water on my fire were actually pouring oil on it.”
In addition, he said at the press conference: “To be honest, Venus and Serena are the reasons I have this trophy today. You allowed me to believe in the dream. When I was growing up, there weren’t many black athletes dominating sports. All the things that happened.” They made it easier for someone like me to get things done. You see the story with Indian Wells and Serena, everything she went through. Venus fought for equal pay.
