Last week Martina came across a post from World of Statistics. This account posts interesting statistical facts and also conducts various surveys. In one of the posts, subscribers were asked to vote for the best tennis player in history. Navratilova was also among the candidates. She was accompanied by Serena Williams, Steffi Graf and Maria Sharapova.
“Don’t even think about voting!”
Surely the publication did not expect to see the reaction of one of the nominees under a harmless post. Navratilova did not like the list presented. First of all, because of the presence of Sharapova in it, who, according to Martina, is unworthy of being in the same company with her.
– What kind of joke? I mean Maria. Really? Don’t even think about voting! — Martina wrote.
It is unlikely that the former Czech athlete could have imagined that within a few days she would find herself in an extremely uncomfortable position due to her intemperate statement. But a few days later, fate brought Navratilova and Sharapova together at the US Open women’s final. Two former tournament winners found themselves in adjacent rows in the stands. Martina sat in front, and behind her, on her left hand, was Maria.
It is unknown whether this meeting happened by chance, but it is difficult to even imagine what was going on in the soul of the Czech tennis legend at that moment. Throughout the match, her face rarely radiated joyful emotions. Sharapova looked unperturbed. She did not become like Navratilova, but calmly watched the game.
