Sakkari on her breakout: “The love and support I received was one of the most beautiful things in my career”
Maria Sakkari spoke at the tournament press conference in San Diego about the outburst she had after being disqualified from the US Open and the messages of joy she received.
Maria Sakkari is looking to get back on track after being eliminated in the first round by Rebecca Masarova at the US Open.
The 28-year-old tennis player referred to her outburst of anger after the defeat and emphasized, among other things, that she felt she had embarrassed all Greeks. Shortly before starting her course in San Diego, Sakkari said she received many supportive messages and that it was one of the best moments of her career.
“I didn’t know they were filming it. I didn’t know it would become so big, especially in my home country. The amount of messages, love and support that I received from my compatriots, but also from many players, was something very nice.
I am grateful that there are so many people who support me. That was the main reason I decided to continue. They gave me a lot of strength. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve felt in my careerhe said characteristically.
