Perception is good but there is room for improvement. What awaits Ukraine in the Davis Cup?

The Ukraine national tennis team defeated the Colombian team on home soil in the Davis Cup World Group match played in Kaspi, Georgia. And for the first time in seven years, the Ukrainian team qualified for the final part of the tournament.

In this match, the Ukrainian team included Alexey Krutykh, Vitaly Orlov, Ilya Beloborodko and Vyacheslav Belinsky (Alexander Ovcharenko was on the bench). The Colombian team was considered his favorite; This team includes a tennis player in the top 100 in the ATP world rankings and one of the best couples of the last decade. The choice of ground was not in the Colombians’ favor; South American tennis players have traditionally been strong on clay, but the Colombians had to play hard against Ukraine.

The Ukrainian national team played without their leader; Denis Molchanov and Vitaly Sachko played against the opposition in Szczecin, Poland this week. Ilya Marchenko, who played in the Challenger in the USA, would also be in the team. However, the absence of these tennis players did not affect the team’s performance in any way.

Alexey Krutykh

Alexey Krutykh became the leader of the Ukrainian national team and won both of its matches. The first of these was the opener against Nicolas Mejia. And this victory was perhaps the most important for Ukrainian tennis players, giving them confidence that they could play the Colombian team and beat it. And already in the next match, Vladislav Orlov managed to give a fight to the leader of the Colombians, Daniel Elai Galan.

And on the second day Krutykh defeated Galan. Moreover, he did this by losing the first set and did not lose a single game in the second game, equalizing the score in the match after losing in doubles. And perhaps this inspired Vladislav Orlov to the eventual victory in the fifth match.

Vladislav Orlov

The real value of Vladislav Orlov is that he was able to impose the fight against Daniel Elai Galan on the first day, showing his colleagues in the national team that even he, the leader of the Colombians in singles, is not invincible. it ranks much higher in the rankings and is in the world top 100. And in the third set, “steering wheel” – happens…

Orlov’s second match against Nicolas Mejia became not only the result, but also the real decoration of the entire meeting. A very high-quality game played by both tennis players, an equal fight, resulted in a tense tiebreak in the third set and the victory of the Ukrainian team.

Ilya Beloborodko and Vyacheslav Belinsky

Both tennis players are still very young and they had to play against the main “ace” of the Colombians – Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah, one of the strongest couples of the last decade. We were not afraid, we were able to fight especially in the second set, it was already good.

It is not known whether Beloborodko and Belinsky will still play in pairs (and in the next match, Ukraine’s first racket in doubles Denis Molchanov can already play for the national team), but in principle their pair has a future. . It’s a distant future, but still…

What’s next?

And then they qualified for the final stage, where the Ukrainian team qualified for the first time in seven years. Here the Ukrainians will play against one of the participants in the final part of the Davis Cup 2023, the group stage of which will be held these days in Split in Croatia, Valencia in Spain, Bologna in Italy and Manchester in Britain.

Of course, the strongest teams and the strongest tennis players in the world play there, but this is the main value of the match against the Colombian team, which played in the final not so long ago – this match showed that there is no need for this. making negative predictions and predicting defeat for our team. The Ukrainian national team is capable of surprises; unpleasant for competitors but pleasant for us.

Australian Open Gabriel Diallo loses to Alexander Zverev in the 1st round

(Melbourne) Quebecer Gabriel Diallo had a good start, but his opponent was simply too strong in the first round of the Australian Open tennis tournament.

Diallo (41e) lost 6-7 (1), 6-1, 6-4 and 6-2 to German Alexander Zverev (third) on Sunday.

Obviously not intimidated by his opponent, Diallo quickly scored a break to make it 3-1 in the opening set. Although he let this lead slip away, he still won the first five points of the tiebreaker to give himself the lead.

Zverev, who reached the final of this first major tournament of the season before losing to the Italian Jannik Sinner last year, was however whipped by this first round. He took the second run in 32 minutes and maintained his pace until the end.

Zverev slammed 15 aces and won 85% of rallies with his first serve ball. He will face in the second round the winner of a duel between the Australian Alexei Popyrin (49e) and the Frenchman Alexandre Muller (50e).

Diallo struggled with his second ball, committing five double faults and winning 38% of the points with it.

Having ended his long-standing association with coach Martin Laurandeau at the start of the year, Diallo begins the new season with three defeats in four games. The first two came at the hands of Hong Kong’s Coleman Wong (132), in the second round in Hong Kong, and Italian Andrea Vavassori (336e), in the first round in Adelaide.

Diallo reached the second round in Melbourne last year. His best Grand Slam result is a third-round loss at the 2024 U.S. Open. However, he is 0-8 against players in the top 10 on the ATP Tour.

Canadian Liam Draxl (145e) was also in action on Sunday morning in Melbourne, with a match against Bosnian Damir Dzumhur (66e).

Félix Auger-Aliassime (seventh) and Denis Shapovalov (23e), among men, just like Leylah Annie Fernandez (22e), Victoria Mboko (17e) and Marina Stakusic (127e), on the women’s side, are also in the running.

The Australian Open tennis tournament gets underway

(Melbourne) Italian Jasmine Paolini was dominant from the start at the Australian Open, winning 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour against Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Sunday.

Paolini (seventh) won the first round in just 27 minutes against Sasnovich (102e) on center court, giving the crowd what they wanted as a curtain-raiser to this first major tournament of the season.

At the end of the day, the world’s leading rackets Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz will make their debut. The Belarusian will face the French Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah (118e), while the Spaniard takes on the Australian Adam Walton (79e).

Sabalenka is seeking her third Australian Open title. She lost in the final last year against American Madison Keys (ninth).

Alcaraz, for his part, will try to win the only Grand Slam tournament he is missing, although he has triumphed twice in France, England and the United States.

The American Venus Williams (576e) will become the oldest player, at 45, to play a main draw match in Australia. She will face the Serbian Olga Danilovic (68e).

Williams has never won the Australian Open. She reached the final in 2003 and 2017, losing to her sister Serena each time.
