Guadalajara Open Leylah Fernandez wins singles and doubles

(Guadalajara) Quebecer Leylah Fernandez advanced to the next round by eliminating Belgian Elise Mertens, 13^e seeded at the Guadalajara Open.

Fernandez defeated Mertens in two sets of 6-3, 6-4 on Tuesday during this WTA 1000 caliber tournament. She will now meet the winner of the duel between the American Madison Keys and her compatriot Emma Navarro.

Both players scored three aces during this one hour and 34 minute clash. Mertens committed eight double faults compared to five for Fernandez.

Fernandez saved four of the 11 break points she faced. His opponent saved two on six occasions.

After a two-hour break, Fernandez returned to the court to play women’s doubles. She and her partner Taylor Townsend beat the American Peyton Stearns and the Tunisian Ons Jabeur in two sets of 6-4, 6-4.

Also in doubles on Tuesday, Quebecer Eugenie Bouchard and her Mexican partner Maria Fernanda Navarro Olivia lost 4-6, 6-7 (6) against Slovakian Tereza Mihalikova and Chinese Xu Yifan.

Later in the evening, Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and her teammate, New Zealander Erin Routliffe, defeated Dutchwoman Arantxa Rus and Ukrainian Lyudmyla Kichenok 6-3, 4-6, 11-9.

The Australian Open tennis tournament gets underway

(Melbourne) Italian Jasmine Paolini was dominant from the start at the Australian Open, winning 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour against Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Sunday.

Paolini (seventh) won the first round in just 27 minutes against Sasnovich (102^e) on center court, giving the crowd what they wanted as a curtain-raiser to this first major tournament of the season.

At the end of the day, the world’s leading rackets Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz will make their debut. The Belarusian will face the French Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah (118^e), while the Spaniard takes on the Australian Adam Walton (79^e).

Sabalenka is seeking her third Australian Open title. She lost in the final last year against American Madison Keys (ninth).

Alcaraz, for his part, will try to win the only Grand Slam tournament he is missing, although he has triumphed twice in France, England and the United States.

The American Venus Williams (576^e) will become the oldest player, at 45, to play a main draw match in Australia. She will face the Serbian Olga Danilovic (68^e).

Williams has never won the Australian Open. She reached the final in 2003 and 2017, losing to her sister Serena each time.

Kostyuk’s potential opponent in the second round of the Australian Open has been announced

Kazakhstani tennis player Yulia Putintseva (WTA 105) can compete with Ukraine Marty Kostyuk (WTA 20) in the second round of the 2026 Australian Open.

Putintseva lost in the first round of the Australian major Beatrice Hadda Mayu (Brazil, WTA 59) in 2 hours 55 minutes.

Kostyuk will face Putintseva if she defeats Elsa Jacquemot (France, WTA 58) in the 1/64 final match.

Ukrainian tennis player Dayana Yastremskaya (WTA 27) has completed its campaign at the 2026 Australian Open.

In the first round, the Ukrainian player was defeated in two sets. Elena-Gabriela Ruse (Romania, WTA 79) In 1 hour 50 minutes.

In the second game, Dayana was trailing 1:5 but managed to regain Ruse’s serve twice. The Ukrainian saved four match points and looked to start a comeback, but lost two games with a score of 5:5 and gave up the match.

Yastremskaya had her third match against Ruse and suffered her third defeat.

Diana performed on the Melbourne courts for the eighth time. Its best result is the semi-final stage in 2024.

Yastremskaya will continue to compete in doubles at the Australian Open, where she will compete alongside Alisha Parks of the United States against 16th seed duo Guo Hanyu/Kristina Mladenovic in the first round.
