Sakkari: “Finally I can shut them up”

Maria Sakkari won the most important title of her career to date, silencing those who judged her.

In the early hours of Sunday (September 24th), Maria Sakkari won the second title of her career in the ninth final in which she took part.

She defeated the American Caroline Dolheide 2-0 (7:5, 6:3) and won the trophy in Guadalajara, at the same time she rose to number 6 in the world rankings on Monday (September 25th).

Speaking at the press conference about the biggest achievement of her career, she claimed that with this trophy she was able to silence all those who judged her and commented on her failure to win a major tournament.

“It’s been really tough all these years, especially the last two when I was a top 10 player. Everyone was like, ‘She’s top 10, top 5, top 3, and she’s only won one 250cc race.’ Finally I can shut her up (laughs). The road is still long. I don’t want to stop at just two titles. I’m just glad I was able to overcome that and prove to myself that I can do great things.

It was hard, I won’t deny that. I won’t even begin to say how difficult the last few months have been, I’ve said enough. It is past. It’s important that I was able to come back and find a way to be happy on the pitch again. That was my biggest goal this week and my biggest achievement. I’m glad I found the way and that it happened in Guadalajara.”

Whether losing the final against Pegula in Mexico last year helped her: “I do not believe that. It has nothing to do with last season. It’s been 12 months, it’s in the past. It has to do with how I played this week, how I was mentally. Nothing else matters. That was me.” “I don’t think about last year, it also affected my game. I just felt like I was ready to do it today, and I did.”

On whether it’s the biggest moment of her career: “It was definitely the biggest win of my career. It’s hard to talk now because I haven’t had time to realize it and just relax and enjoy it. Tomorrow and the day after will certainly be two very happy days. I’m grateful.” It happened here. I’ve said many times this week that I’m enjoying my time here. Thank you for being here, it was great.”

What makes it harder for your opponents: My fighting spirit, the fact that I don’t give up most of the time, my consistent play. I’m athletic and it’s hard to get by.

On the question of whether Mexico gives the Greeks charm (Tsitsipas won in Los Campos this year): “Probably. I feel like I personally always play well here. I’ve said before that the location suits my game. I am happy that two Greeks won tournaments in Mexico this year.”
