Laver Cup World Team nears victory

(Vancouver) Team World added to its lead on Saturday, leading 10-2 against Team Europe at the Laver Cup.

In the first match of the day, Taylor Fritz defeated Andrey Rublev 6-2, 7-6 (3) to give his team a fifth straight victory, as Team World swept Friday’s day with four victories .

Fritz and Rublev exchanged aces, they who were able to count on their quality service.

Fritz dominated the game when he went to the net, winning 14 of his 77 points earned in the match that way.

Team Europe then signed its first victory when Casper Ruud defeated Tommy Paul in two sets of 7-6 (6), 6-2.

Frances Tiafoe, however, put Team World back on the path to victory in the next match, beating Hubert Hurkacz 7-5, 6-3.

Hurkacz was also in the doubles match, the last match of Saturday’s program. He and Gaël Monfils faced the young duo of Félix Auger-Aliassime and Ben Shelton.

Auger-Aliassime and Shelton won the match 7-5, 6-4 to give Team World two more points.

Each match won on Friday gave one point, while the matches on Saturday gave two points. The first team to 13 points wins the title.

Last year, in London, the World Team won the tournament for the first time. Team Europe had won the previous four performances (the 2020 show was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic).

(Melbourne) Italian Jasmine Paolini was dominant from the start at the Australian Open, winning 6-1, 6-2 in just over an hour against Belarusian Aliaksandra Sasnovich on Sunday.

Paolini (seventh) won the first round in just 27 minutes against Sasnovich (102e) on center court, giving the crowd what they wanted as a curtain-raiser to this first major tournament of the season.

At the end of the day, the world’s leading rackets Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz will make their debut. The Belarusian will face the French Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah (118e), while the Spaniard takes on the Australian Adam Walton (79e).

Sabalenka is seeking her third Australian Open title. She lost in the final last year against American Madison Keys (ninth).

Alcaraz, for his part, will try to win the only Grand Slam tournament he is missing, although he has triumphed twice in France, England and the United States.

The American Venus Williams (576e) will become the oldest player, at 45, to play a main draw match in Australia. She will face the Serbian Olga Danilovic (68e).

Williams has never won the Australian Open. She reached the final in 2003 and 2017, losing to her sister Serena each time.
