Australian Open organizers make historic schedule change
The Australian Open will be played over 15 days starting from 2024. As with Roland Garros, it will start on Sunday to ease the pressure of a late finish for players and fans.
The first round matches will be played over 3 days, not 2.
The afternoon session at Rod Laver Arena and Margaret Court Arena will consist of two matches instead of three to limit the possibility of late finishes.
“We have listened to feedback from players and fans and are pleased to provide a solution that will minimize late match finishes while ensuring fair and equitable scheduling on stadium courts. The additional day will achieve this goal by improving the schedule for both fans and players. Tournament director Craig Tiley said “The first round will now be played over three days instead of two, giving fans an extra day of incredible tennis, entertainment, food and family fun,” he said.
