The Russian gave vent to his emotions and paid the price.
Daniil Medvedev’s disgusting behavior in unsuccessful matches has become the talk of the town. Once again, the Russian tennis player threw a tantrum at a prestigious tournament in Shanghai in a match with American Sebastian Korda.
The octopus smashed rackets after losing rallies and shouted obscenely throughout the arena.
Representative of an illustrious dynasty
Medvedev came to the Masters in Shanghai after a fairly successful performance at the tournament in Beijing, where he reached the final. The Russian started the match with Chilean Cristian Garin. In a game with a tennis player from the bottom of the top hundred, Medvedev did not experience any problems, defeating his opponent in two games – 6:3; 6:3.
The Russian’s opponent in the third round was the American Sebastian Korda. The son of 1998 Australian Open winner Petr Korda also got into good shape ahead of the Chinese tournament. True, Sebastian cannot yet boast of the same successes as his father. Even sisters who compete in golf achieved more serious victories. Sebastian’s best achievement is 25th place in the ranking and the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
This season, the American missed several months due to a serious injury. After a long absence, Korda showed up for the tournament in Astana, where he reached the finals. Prior to this, he also did well in Zhuhai, where he was eliminated in the semi-finals.
In Shanghai, Korda also started from the second round. He was up against local player Boo Yunchaokete, who had never risen above 164th place in the ATP rankings. The US representative defeated him in two sets – 6:1; 6:4.
“One of the biggest victories of my career”
The first set of the match between Medvedev and Korda turned out to be equal. Tennis players took their games with confident serves, not allowing them to even think about a break. It was difficult to imagine that the drama in this set would unfold precisely on Daniil’s serve.
The tennis players naturally played until the tie-break, the beginning of which was more successful for Medvedev. Daniil was the first to get the chance to take the starting game, but at the most crucial moment he was let down by double faults. In total, he failed to serve three times during the tiebreak, losing the game with three set points.
During the break, Medvedev could not contain his emotions. He sat down on the bench and began hitting the seat with his racket. The equipment could not withstand the powerful blows and broke, after which it went into the trash.
It seemed that the outburst of anger did Dana good. He earned a break point in the first game, but was unable to convert it. And then he immediately gave away the game on his serve. By this point, Medvedev was already on the verge of a nervous breakdown. He constantly spoke to the coach in a raised voice, but this only got in the way. With the score 1:4, the Russian again took out his anger on his racket, throwing it onto the court.
Despite the deplorable situation, the Russian continued to resist. On Korda’s serve in the seventh game the score was 40:40 twice, but the American did not flinch. Daniel even shouted out in anger: “He hits everything!” Well, how to play? At the same time, the Russian accompanied his powerful speech with strong Russian obscenities.
But the outburst of emotions did not help Medvedev. In the very next game, Korda scored a victory, which became his first in his career in matches with players from the top 5.
— I had a three-month break this year. It was difficult, I had to overcome a long way, but I’m happy with the way I played today. This is definitely one of the biggest victories of my career,” Korda said after the match.
An early departure will not allow Medvedev to earn a substantial fee, but will not affect his position in the ATP rankings: Daniil will still be third. However, if he wants to finish the season with the title, then he needs to get rid of hysterics.
