Karolina Mukhova announced that she will take part in the WTA Finals due to an injury problem and Maria Sakkari will take her place.

Maria Sakkari, ranked number 9 in the world, was the first substitute for the WTA Finals. Ultimately, Karolina Muhova will not be taking part in Cancun because her wrist problem ultimately prevented her from taking part.

It is with great sadness that I announce that I will miss my first WTA final in Cancun.

Together with the team and the doctors, we did everything we could to heal my wrist injury right up to the last minute. Unfortunately, the recovery is taking longer than we expected and that’s why I had to make this unpleasant decision. I really appreciate the support of all the fans

I will do my best to come back in 2024 and have another chance to be part of the WTA Finals” wrote the Czech tennis player on social media.

This means that Maria Sakkari has the opportunity to keep the points that she would have lost if she did not take part. Opponents will be:

  • Arina Sabalenka (Belarus)
  • Iga Swiotek (Poland)
  • Coco Goff (USA)
  • Elena Rybakina (Kazakhstan)
  • Jessica Pegula (USA)
  • Marketa Vodrusova (Czech Republic)
  • Ons Jambert (Tunisia)
