Wimbledon: One step closer to creating the Disneyland of tennis

Merton’s committee has approved plans to expand Wimbledon’s facilities, which will now be compared to Disneyland.

The organizers of Wimbledon gave the first and most important green light for the expansion plans presented in 2021.

Specifically, they submitted a proposal for the golf courses adjacent to the tennis facilities and received approval from Merton council on Friday evening.

What does this plan entail? Not one, not two, but 38 new tennis courts, one of which will be added to the two main courts and designated as a venue for main round matches.

This new stadium can accommodate up to 8,000 spectators and features a sliding roof, providing an additional solution for rainy days.

In addition, additional facilities for athletes and spectators will be built and the lake in the park will also be used.

Wimbledon organizers bought the site for £65 million in 2018 and have submitted plans for 2021.

Strong reactions from citizens

At the same time, there are strong reactions from residents in the area who are demanding that the specific plan not be implemented.

More than 13,000 Londoners have signed a petition calling for the installation to be stopped, arguing it would destroy the existing park on the site.

It is estimated that around 2,000 people will be relocated, which has sparked a backlash.

But now the hot potato is in the hands of the Mayor of London. He is the one who gives the final green light after she takes control of the environmental impact study.
