Greek tennis player Maria Sakkari (WTA 9) lost Arine Sabalenko (WTA 1), in the 1st round of the “Bakalar” group at the WTA Final Tournament 2023.
The match ended in two sets in 1 hour and 15 minutes. Sakkari managed to win only 1 match from Sabalenka.

This was the 11th meeting of tennis players. Maria lost to Arina in their 7th head to head match.
Note that Sakkari entered the Final Tournament as a replacement for Carolina Muchova, who withdrew from the competition due to an ankle injury.
Meanwhile, Muchova beat Sabalenka twice in 2023.
Maria and Arina play in the same quarter as Elena Rybakina and Jessica Pegula. Previously, the American had defeated the Kazakhstan representative in two sets.
