The last tennis week of November has come to an end. The girls competed in the junior Final tournament (WTA Elite Trophy) in Zhuhai, and the boys competed for the trophy in two 500,000-meter indoor hard court events. The top of Ukrainian women’s tennis has already completed the season, but the always promising Daria Snigur managed to please the Ukrainian fans at the ITF tournament. Everything is in order…
WTA Elite Cup
One of the main tournaments of the week took place in the Middle Kingdom, more precisely in the Chinese city of Zhuhai. The championship was played for the first time in 3 years in the tournament called the Junior WTA Final. Previously, competitions were not held in this country due to the pandemic and the “Peng Shuai case”.
12 single participants were divided into 4 groups of 3 people. In attendance: Daria Kasatkina, Barbora Krejcikova, Magda Linette, Beatriz Haddad Maya, Caroline Garcia, Madison Keys, Zheng Qingwen, Alena Ostapenko, Donna Vekic, Zhu Lin, Lyudmila Samsonova and Veronika Kudermetova.
There was no clear favorite on paper, only 1 outsider: Zhu Lin. The Chinese woman is at the bottom of the WTA rankings and received a wild card from the organizers. But from the group “Rose” it was she who left the “neutral” tennis players Kudermetova and Samsonova in the semifinals.
In the semi-finals, Zhu Lin managed to fight against her stronger and more interesting compatriot Zheng Qingwen; He had a hot season at the end of the season, reaching the quarter-finals of the US Open, winning the Asian Games and winning the championship in Zhengzhou. and now we reach the final of the small final.

However, in the final, she lost to Beatrice Haddad Maya, a fan of the Chinese people. The Brazilian, who was suspended from tennis in 2019 due to the doping scandal and had trouble in all kinds of ITF series tournaments after 2020, had a great last 2 seasons. The lawn specialist won the first title and even the biggest of his career on the hard court (which was already strange because he was from South America) and even against the “home” tennis player.
Now Beatrice will be the world’s 11th racket for the first time. Beatrice is currently at the peak of her career and her age is necessarily appropriate – 27 years. He is not young for the sport, but he is not old either, but as we have seen, he is incredibly experienced in his ability to play on all surfaces. However, it is worth noting that things were not going well for Beatrice before the WTA Elite Trophy. But again, this probably has something to do with an injury he picked up at Wimbledon in the summer, after which he was out for a month and probably out of shape.

Haddad Maya, who won the singles final, also competed with Veronica Kudermetova in the doubles final and won the championship here as well.
Beatrice became the first tennis player to win the title double in a minor WTA Final tournament.
Ukrainian Lyudmila Kichenok also played doubles at the competition in Zhuhai. Lyudmila won the last two cups in this tournament, so they had hopes of success (though no, her sister did not play), but with Ulrikke Eikeri…
How can you hope for anything when your teammates are just getting to know each other on the field? And given Kichenok’s originality, he had no chance of success lately. As a result: two defeats in the group from the top tandems of Xu Wang / Xu Yifan and Miyu Kato / Aldila Sutjiadi.

Meanwhile, the organizers of the small Final tournament should consider a group round with 16 participants and, accordingly, quarterfinals. Because the situation in the “Rosa” group, where each tennis player wins one of the 2 matches, is more like luck. Although there was no need to complain, it was Zhu Lin who made it to the semi-finals, not a scoundrel…
ATP 500 Vienna / ATP 500 Basel
Not only is twice-weekly 500k not a common occurrence, but the rosters in both tournaments were strong; Although without Djokovic and Alcaraz, Austria is much more interesting than Switzerland…
In Vienna, the attention of Ukrainian fans turned (without any reference) to Gael Monfils, who rose from the ashes. Yes, mostly because he is Elina Svitolina’s husband, but what’s wrong with that? Elina supports him in the stands, he is seen, noticed, the world media write about it, so it is even more pleasant to watch Gael, although he is already a lover of spectacle and beauty in tennis.
Unfortunately, after the victory in Stockholm, Gael did not manage to advance much on the grid. He defeated Daniel Almayer in the 1/16 final and lost to another showman Francis Tiafoe in the 2nd round.
The good performance of the “Greek God” Stefanos Tsitsipas in the tournament held in the capital of Austria draws attention. Following his victory in Los Cabos, and indeed the start of his relationship with Paula Badosa, Stefanos failed in tournament after tournament, but managed to reach the semi-finals in Austria, where he lost to Daniil Medvedev.
Top seeds Medvedev and Jannik Sinner met in the final. The Italian defeated Daniil in three sets, making him the second time in a month. Interestingly, until October 2023 the score was 6:0 in favor of the “neutral” tennis player.
By the way, in the semifinals Sinner edged out another “neutral”, Andrey Rublev.
The Italian reached his sixth final in 2023 and won his fourth trophy. For Sinner, it was the 13th final match of his career. He now has 10 titles to his name.

Felix Auger-Aliassime won in Basel, Roger Federer’s hometown. An incredibly important trophy for Auger, who has frankly been underachieving lately.
Felix defended last year’s title and remains 19th in the ATP rankings. For Auger, this is the 5th final victory at the ATP level in his career.

It is worth highlighting the first seed, Holger Rune, who lost to Auger in the semi-finals. After Wimbledon and before the tournament in Basel, the Dane had only 1 win in 10 matches (slightly above Auger in Beijing). Rune left Patrick Mouratoglou and the legendary Boris Becker became his coach in mid-October.
It looks like Becker has already managed to show Runa a few coordination techniques:
Ukrainian Vitaly Sachko also played in Vienna. The Ukrainian lost to Lorenzo Sonego in the first qualifying round.
Ukrainians in Challengers
Alexey Krutykh has been playing rather poorly lately. In Hamburg, Alexey initially lost to Ilya Marchenko, and last week in the first round of selection in Brest he lost to Adrian Andreev, around whom there was once excitement, but this is more likely not because of the game, but because of the consonant name and surname.
Two tiebreaks – two scores 4:7. But thanks to Alexey for winning both matches against the Colombians in the Davis Cup for the Ukrainian national team.
After the victory in Hamburg, Ilya Marchenko was not enough for his rival in Ortisei.
Here the experienced Ukrainian won in the 1st round against local Lorenzo Rotolli and lost in the last qualifying round to Italian Luca Giacomini in three games.
Title Snigur
Ukraine did not remain without a trophy in the last week of November! Daria Snigur unexpectedly won the ITF W60 series tournament in Glasgow (Scotland).
Unexpectedly, although not a very good word, but due to more or less strong opponents, remained the 2nd seed, Harriet Dart, whom the Ukrainian player eliminated in the semi-finals.
It is interesting that Daria lost 2 matches against Harriet before the match in Glasgow.
This is Snigur’s first victory in the ITF 60,000m; he had previously won the 100,000 m twice. All victories were achieved on hard surfaces. He also won the trophy in the ITF W100 series tournament held in Vitoria, Spain in 2023.

Dudun final and Oleynikova semi-final
The Ukrainians failed to show anything special in the ITF tournaments last week.
Igor Dudun reached the final in doubles in the 15,000 meter race held in Kuwait. In the final, the Ukrainian player and his partner Samuel Pushkar lost to Bor Artnak / Matic Dimic in three sets.

Ukrainian Alexandra Oleynikova performed well at the 25,000-seat event in Santa Margherita di Pula. Due to the adverse weather conditions in the tournament area, the Ukrainian athlete had to play the 1/8 final and quarter-final matches on the same day.
Oleynikova won both events, but there was not enough strength in the semifinals for the top seed, 16-year-old Czech tennis star and future winner of the 25,000 meters, Brenda Frugvirtova. However, Alexandra struggled there too, losing to the Czech Republic 4:6, 4:6.
off-court tennis
The funniest thing that can happen is when one “neutral” allows a second. This is what Lyudmila Samsonova did with Arina Sabalenka, ranked No. 1 in the WTA rankings.
Lyudmila said that Iga Swiatek is the real leader of women’s tennis:
“Iga. one hundred%. I feel like he’s the real #1. We performed together at the finals in Beijing, and he came up to me during the ceremony and was very nice. “I know it’s hard sometimes,” he said. “When I started to get to know him better and get closer to him, I felt something special.”
However, Samsonova’s words still seem like flowers compared to what Serena Williams has done.
The legendary American cropped Sabalenka’s figure from the general photo and published a high-quality (and it’s not a matter of pixels) edited photo on Instagram. At the same time, Arina published a photo with Serena on social networks.
Sergei Stakhovsky, the former leader of men’s tennis, could not help but react to Williams’ move:
“I guess Serena doesn’t believe in his ‘neutrality’ either,” Stakhovsky wrote on Instagram.

Sunday, October 29th started with sad news. On this occasion, the death of Matthew Perry, the famous actor, star of the TV series Friends and a big tennis fan, was learned.
The WTA has collected photos of Perry captured with tennis players, people directly connected to tennis, or simply in the stands near the court:
