They wanted Sabalenka to play. Why aren’t the WTA 2023 Finals held in the Czech Republic?

Polish tennis player Magda Linette (WTA 23) explained why it was decided to hold the WTA Finals in Cancun (Mexico) and not in Ostrava (Czech Republic) as originally planned:

“The disadvantage of Ostrava was that we did not have a 100% guarantee that all the girls would be able to play. If at least one of them is not allowed to enter the country, the tournament will not be held and this will entail a large fine,” said Magda.

World number one Aryna Sabalenka from Belarus is competing in the WTA Finals 2023 tournament.

Lynette served on the WTA Player Council until September 2023.

Note that in July 2023 the Czech Ministry of Internal Affairs reported: A tennis player from Russia was deported from the country before the start of the WTA 250 tournament in Prague.
