Tsitsipas on Bandosa: “She is our doubles coach and the new family member”
Stefanos Tsitsipas spoke about the doubles title he won with his brother, who was coached by Paula Bandosa and whom he now considers part of their family.
The Stefanos and Petros Tsitsipas defeated Ariel Bear and Adam Pavlacek in the Antwerp final and won their first ATP tournament title. Tsitsipas spoke to us on the occasion of his first title with his brother Alize Limn particularly mentioned Paula Bandosa, who was her trainer.
“It wasn’t until match point that I realized how important that was. Then I thought we would soon win an ATP title with my brother! All I had to do was serve well, so I did, and the rest is history. This moment was by far the most intense and emotional of my tennis career. I know it was a 250 and I’ve won bigger tournaments, but the significance of achieving something like that with my brother, even though I had dreamed of it, was something very intense and high for me. We were able to celebrate it together and create our own moment.
I hope we have many more in the future. I’m talking about competing in Grand Slams, competing in the Olympics… trophies sound crazy to two kids who grew up in the suburbs of Athens. But playing at the Slams is a bit unlikely. I think now we can set bigger goals. Playing in front of the crowd in the night session of the US OpenRizian audience by Philippe Chatrier, moments like these can make our dreams come true.”
His beloved Bandosa was the trainer of the two brothers: “I invited Paula to the square because there is something that people don’t know. Paula was our first coach, me and Petros, she took over at the US Open. After my disqualification in the singles, I was left without a coach.” Paula came and took on the role of doubles coach.
She helped me and Peter perfect our dual strategies. She is the first to work with us three to four hours a day to ensure we stay at our best. That’s why I asked her to come to the awards ceremony because she did it. it’s part of that success.” When asked whether it would be possible to train him individually, Stefanos replied with a laugh: “He won’t be involved in singles, but I’m more flexible in doubles.”.
The Greek tennis player couldn’t help but mention his relationship with Paula Bandosa:“The motivation is greater. I don’t feel like I’m working alone, but rather I feel like I’m representing an idea. It’s a new family member. It’s stronger, braver, it gives me a bigger purpose and I’m happy to be able to share something like that.
I didn’t expect something like this to come into my life. I’m very happy that we motivate each other. It’s a great journey and I want to achieve as much as possible. I want to experience these moments with my loved ones, to be touched, to cry, to laugh and to experience all of this with someone who does the same.”
