Jessica had every chance to close out Arina in two sets with a score of 6:2. In game 1, Pegula abandoned her serve at 5:2, but in game 10 she still managed to serve successfully.
In the 2nd round, Jessica also failed to serve at 5:2 and took 2 match points, but then made a reverse break and won the match on the 7th match point.
This was the 6th meeting of tennis players. Jessica won her 2nd and 1st match since 2020.
It was the first time an American won against a tennis player ranked first in the WTA rankings.
Pegula’s winning streak is 7 matches. Earlier, Jessica defeated Elena Rybakina in the 1st round of the WTA Finals and won the cup at a competition in Seoul before the start of the Final Tournament.
Jessica and Sabalenko play in the same group with Maria Sakkari and Rybakina. In the final round, Pegula will face Sakkari and Arina will face Rybakina.
