Roman unexpectedly beat a top tennis player and broke a personal record.

Russian tennis player Roman Safiullin has recently given fans many reasons to rejoice. The day before, the player achieved his greatest success at the adult level, pointing out the way out to the main talent of world tennis, Carlos Alcaraz.

The fans are simply delighted with this victory!

Biggest career win

Safiullin has made significant progress this season. At the end of January, he finished in the top 100 of the ATP rankings, and arrived at the Masters in Paris as the 45th racket in the world. Roman’s rise was helped by success at Wimbledon, where he sensationally reached the quarterfinals. Also among the player’s successes can be noted four victories over tennis players from the top 5 in 2023.

True, this was not enough to get a place in the main draw of the French tournament. I had to fight my way through the qualifications. The opening match was not difficult: it took Roman a little over an hour to defeat wild card holder Arthur Cazeau. But in the final selection I had to suffer. The resistance of Australian Jordan Thompson was broken only in the third set.

In the first round of the main draw, Safiullin met another local special invitation holder, Alexander Muller, who did not cause problems for the Russian. The next match, according to the absolute majority, should have been Roman’s last. He was opposed by Carlos Alcaraz, who occupies the second line of the ATP rankings.

Few people believed that Roman would compete for victory with the main talent of recent years, but the Russian was against such predictions. Our player allowed his opponent to make a break in the third game, but immediately took the opponent’s serve and leveled the situation. In the end, Safiullin looked more stable and, thanks to another break, created the necessary foundation for winning the set – 6:3.

The scenario of the second game largely repeated the previous segment. Roman again quickly gave up the game on his serve, but immediately made a break, followed by another, which allowed him to win the set with a score of 6:4.

This victory was the biggest in Safiullin’s career. Until this moment, he had never defeated a tennis player from the top three. Alcaraz lost in two games for only the third time this season.

“Taught this overrated player a lesson”

The loud sensation at the tournament in Paris inspired fans from different countries to make enthusiastic comments about the Russian, as well as to hate the Spanish player.

– Roman, I respect you. “You taught this overrated player a lesson,” riicxrd0.7797 congratulated Safiullina.

“It’s a shame that Safiullin suffered so much from injuries during his career. I’m sure he can play even better – @LloydE255084 regrets the missed opportunities.

– Spanish journalists are idiots. They are inflating Carlitos, but he is an ordinary tennis player,” noted @rafagonza2005.

– What were you waiting for? Safiullin is a giant killer,” praises the Russian @AJacksonDass.

— The ATP rating system is biased. She doesn’t differentiate between beating a top opponent and a low-ranked player. It’s unfair that Safiullin will receive the same number of points as if he had defeated, for example, Jordan Thompson,” @JohnBrod10 criticized the ATP points system.

“I think people now understand how deadly Roman Safiullin is,” wrote the Double Fault podcast account.

A difficult meeting awaits Roman ahead. He will play compatriot Karen Khachanov, who is ranked 15th in the ATP rankings.
