Sakkari: “The result of the game against Sabalenka was still in my head”
Maria Sakkari attributed her loss to Rybakina, which resulted in her elimination from the semifinals of the WTA Finals, to her previous match loss to Sabalenka.
Maria Sakkari fought against Elena Rybakina for about 2.5 hours, but lost 1-2 sets after an exciting match and was eliminated in the semi-finals of the WTA Finals.
In the statements she made at the end of the game, the Greek champion expressed her delight at almost winning a game that seemed to be a loss for her, while she focused on her first game of the tournament, this one against Sambalenka.
“I would say I was very tense, very stressed. Probably the result of the previous fight with Arina was still in my head. My biggest victory today was overcoming that fear on the pitch.
I narrowly missed winning today’s game. I thought that the game would end without my good performance and that I wouldn’t end the season in the best possible way. But my performance today was very promising.”The 28-year-old Greek tennis player initially emphasized and added:
“One side of me said I couldn’t do it. I had two creatures fighting in my head and within me. I’m glad I was able to overcome that because it would have been very, very difficult for me to lose two easy games.
That was my biggest victory in today’s race. It could have been ugly, but I was so close to winning the race that it seemed lost.”
It is noted that Sakkari will complete her participation in the WTA Finals in the early hours of Friday (11/03), where she will face Jessica Pegula, who took first place in the semifinals, while Sambalenka and Rybakina took second place occupied group confrontation between them.
