World number seven Ons Jabeur said he would donate part of the prize money from the WTA Finals to help Palestinians affected by the conflict in the Middle East.
Tunisia’s Jabeur defeated Czech Marketa Vondrousova in the second round of the competition in Cancun with a score of 6:4, 6:3. After the meeting, the tennis player spoke about the international conflict, barely holding back tears.
— The situation in the world does not make me happy. It is very difficult to see children die every day. It breaks my heart. I decided to donate part of my prize money to help the Palestinians. This is not a political message, but simply humanity. “I want peace, that’s all,” The Guardian quotes the athlete.
On the morning of October 7, the Palestinian-Israeli conflict began to escalate. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an address to the nation that the country is in a state of war.
