Billie Jean King Cup Canada leads 1-0 against Spain thanks to Marina Stakusic

(Seville) Ontario rookie Marina Stakusic seemed unintimidated in her first career match with the Canadian team at the Billie Jean King Cup on Wednesday. The 18-year-old crushed her Spanish opponent Rebeka Masarova 6-3, 6-1 in the first singles match to give Canada a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series.

Stakusic, who is at 258e world rank, took barely more than an hour to overcome Masarova, 65e in the world, on the cement of the Estadio la Cartuja in Seville. She also beat the highest ranked player since the start of her professional career.

Things could have gotten out of hand at the end of the match, when Stakusic faced three break points while leading 4-1 in the second set. Masarova, however, was unable to take advantage of the opportunity to shake the representative of the maple leaf. Stakusic instead came back to attack in the next game by making her fourth break to seal the outcome of the match.

The Mississauga player therefore converted four of her seven break points against Masarova, who was unable to break her in five attempts. In addition, Stakusic obtained 75% of his points with his first ball, compared to only 56% for his opponent. The representative of the maple leaf also knew how to limit direct errors; she committed nine, compared to 33 for the Spaniard.

Leylah Annie Fernandez could seal the outcome of this duel between the two countries during the second singles match scheduled for the afternoon. Fernandez, the highest ranked Canadian in the world by virtue of her 35e level, will face for the occasion Sara Sorribes Tormo, 50e world racket.

In doubles, Gabriela Dabrowski, of Ottawa, and Fernandez, of Laval, should cross swords with Cristina Busca and Marina Bassols at the end of the day. The doubles teams could, however, be changed after the second singles match of the day, depending on the results.

Montreal’s Eugenie Bouchard and Vancouver’s Rebecca Marino will be rested on Wednesday. Canada, led by captain Heidi El Tabakh, is scheduled to play its second group stage match on Thursday against Poland.

The winning country of Group C, to which Canada belongs, will advance to the semi-finals. The final of this competition, which brings together 12 national teams, must take place on Sunday.

Australian Open Alcaraz and Swiatek conquer the only Grand Slam that resists them

(Melbourne) They have triumphed at Roland Garros, Wimbledon and the United States Open, but never in Melbourne: Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek return to the Australian Open on Sunday in search of the only Grand Slam title still missing from their record.

Winning the first Grand Slam of the season is “my main goal this season,” the 22-year-old Spaniard said on Friday.

Winning the four major world tennis tournaments would be “incredible” in itself, but achieving it at just 22 years old would be “even better,” Alcaraz insisted at a press conference.

Author of an exceptional season in 2025 (eight titles), the Spaniard will be particularly scrutinized after parting ways in mid-December to the general surprise of his trainer Juan Carlos Ferrero.

“I would have liked to be able to continue” with Alcaraz, said Ferrero, under whose leadership “Carlitos” won his six Grand Slam titles.

“We closed this chapter by mutual agreement,” replied Alcaraz on Friday in Melbourne, ensuring good relations with Ferrero.

Now coached only by Samuel Lopez, who joined his team at the end of 2024, Alcaraz has not played any preparation tournaments for the Australian Open.

However, he will need to be at the top of his form to triumph in Melbourne, where he has never made it past the quarter-finals and where his great rival Jannik Sinner (2e), double title holder, is waiting for him.

The Italian skipped the Davis Cup finals in November to have an extra week of preparation for the 2026 season, while Alcaraz was nursing a right leg injury.

The two ogres of the circuit, who faced each other in the final of Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and the United States Open in 2025, already crossed swords on Saturday in South Korea, during a lucrative exhibition won in two sets by the 22-year-old Spaniard.

“It was a pretty relaxed match,” Sinner said. “In exhibition […] “you’re not as tense” as in an official match, the Italian clarified.

Gauff aims for regularity

Ten-time winner of the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic will try once again in Melbourne to conquer a 25e major trophy which would make him the only record holder for Grand Slam titles, ahead of Australian Margaret Court (24 titles).

Triple finalist in Melbourne, the Russian Daniil Medvedev (12e) is also one of the contenders given his clear recovery in form in recent months, which allowed him to win the ATP 250 in Almaty in October and in Brisbane at the beginning of January.

In the women’s draw, if the world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka advances as the big favorite after having played the last three finals of the Australian Open, her runner-up Iga Swiatek (2e) has a first opportunity this year to win the only major trophy missing from his collection.

A possible title in Melbourne would be “a dream come true”, but “I don’t wake up every morning thinking about it” either, the Pole qualified.

Finalist in three of the four Grand Slams in 2025 and winner of the last United States Open, Sabalenka started the season by winning the WTA 500 in Brisbane for the second year in a row.

But “it’s not just Iga or me,” warned the Belarusian, very comfortable on hard courts. “There is also Coco” Gauff (3e), which deprived her of a first title at Roland-Garros in June, the Kazakhstani Elena Rybakina (5e), the American Jessica Pegula (6e)…

Without forgetting Amanda Anisimova (4e), finalist at Wimbledon and the US Open in 2025.

“I am aware of the expectations, but I use them to motivate myself,” said the American.

Title holder in Melbourne, her compatriot Madison Keys anticipates that she will be “very nervous” when she takes the court. “But on the other hand, I have never been relaxed entering the court in the first round of a Grand Slam,” she put it into perspective.

Finally, for Coco Gauff, the objective will be above all to be “more regular” from one tournament to another in 2026, particularly on serve.

“I think that the more stable my level of service is, the more regular my results will become,” anticipated the double Grand Slam winner.

Medvedev before the Australian Open: “I want to win the tournament twice in the same city. But now I’m in Melbourne”

Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev said he has set a goal to win the tournament twice in the same city, but is currently focused on competing at the Australian Open.

Medvedev won the tournament in Brisbane, Australia in January. This is the Russian’s 22nd ATP singles title; he won all the tournaments in different cities. Earlier, Medvedev jokingly asked the ATP to expand the geography of cities, since there were few tournaments left in which he had not won.

“Now my goal is to win a second title in a city where I have already won. This is a clear goal. I say it out loud. I’m not sure that I will achieve it, but I will do my best to achieve it. We are in Melbourne, so I hope to reach 23 titles before I win a second somewhere else,” Reuters quoted Medvedev as saying.

Last August, it became known that Medvedev had ended his long-term collaboration with coach Gilles Cervara, with whom he had worked since 2017. Swede Thomas Johansson and Australian Rohan Goetzke are currently working with the former world number one.

– Of course, this was an important decision in my life related to Gilles. (After the US Open) there was a turning point. This helped me a lot. I really enjoyed working with Thomas and Rohan.

At first we had, so to speak, a trial period until the end of the season. But I’m happy working with them. I think they also like working with me, so we decided to continue. I hope this will be a long and successful cooperation,” he added.

Medvedev, seeded 11th, will face Dutchman Jesper de Jong in the first round of the Australian Open.

Andreeva defeated her friend in the semi-finals of a cool tournament! A very strange trick helped

In the confrontation between the Russians, Mirra turned out to be stronger.

18-year-old Mirra Andreeva in the final of the WTA 500 tournament in Adelaide! In the semi-finals, the best Russian tennis player beat 21-year-old compatriot Diana Schneider. As Andreeva admitted, a very strange tactic helped her win – calling her opponent by a different name.

Walk through the tournament bracket

Mirra Andreeva (3rd seed) started the tournament straight from the second round, where she easily beat the representative of the Czech Republic, Maria Bouzkova, in two sets – 6:3, 6:1. Then she faced a serious test: the quarter-finals with the best tennis player in Australia, Maya Joynt. The fans actively supported their compatriot, but this did not help the local athlete: Joint won only two games. Despite the confident victory, Andreeva admitted that the match was tense for her.

“I knew it would be difficult to play against her, especially here with the support of the home crowd, so I was expecting a very difficult match.” And to be honest, I had to stay focused until the very last play. She played a great match, performed very well, and I’m just incredibly happy about today’s victory,” Andreeva said after the match.

Then the semi-finals and the Russian derby – Andreeva against Diana Schneider. For Schneider, the tournament bracket and the path to this meeting were longer by one match. In the first round, Diana beat the Canadian tennis player Leila Fernandez with some difficulty – 7:5, 6:3, then in a tense match she beat the representative of the Czech Republic Katerina Sinyakova – 6:1, 2:6, 7:5. In the quarterfinals, Schneider was stronger than American Emma Navarro – 6:3, 6:3. It should be noted that Diana had very serious opposition on her way to the semifinals.

But before the start of the semi-finals, for many experts it was Andreeva who was the favorite. Firstly, Diana is just gaining momentum and trying to get back to her best form. Secondly, Mirra confidently beat her compatriot in the only head-to-head meeting, which took place two years ago in the first round at a tournament in Brisbane.

“Never mind, I’m weird”

Additional interest in the match was fueled not only by the status of the hidden final, but also by the relationships between the athletes. Most recently, they decided not to perform as a duet anymore. And this is not about sports results, because together they won silver medals at the 2024 Olympics, and last year they took two titles. There were even rumors that the girls had a conflict. However, most fans did not believe this version, deciding that Andreeva simply decided to concentrate on singles. In any case, the meeting in the semi-finals promised to be hot.

And the first set was indeed a tense struggle. Schneider took the first game, after which the swing began until the score became 3:3. Then Mirra seized the initiative and won the first game. Considering that Andreeva had problems at the very beginning of the match, it seemed that Diana would be able to please the audience with intrigue.

The second set also began with an equal fight, however, this time Mirra quickly managed to take control of the game. With the score 2:2, Schneider abruptly switched out of the fight and was no longer able to take a single game. Andreeva calmly brought the matter to the final victory – 6:3, 6:2. The match lasted 1 hour 24 minutes. Many fans noted that the meeting was more like a friendly, although access to the final depended on its result.

And after the victory, Mirra indirectly confirmed that she had no conflicts with her compatriot. She praised her opponent for her vigorous start and noted that it was difficult for her to play against her friend.

— As I already said, before the meeting I was very nervous. On the court I tried to imagine that I was playing against some Needy Schnuper. It’s a made-up name, never mind, I’m weird (laughs). We know each other very well, we play a lot of tournaments together, so it was difficult. But it turned out to be a great match, I’m very pleased with my level of play,” Andreeva said on the court after the semi-final match.

Mirra reached the final of the tournament, where she will meet 19-year-old Canadian representative Victoria Mboko.
