Daniil Medvedev has surpassed the achievement of Olympic champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov in the number of victories among Russians over players from the top ten of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) rankings for a calendar year, reports OptaAce.

On Wednesday, the 27-year-old athlete defeated Germany’s Alexander Zverev in a group stage match at the ATP Finals Tournament. This victory was his 12th over a top-10 tennis player in 2023. Medvedev updated the record of Yevgeny Kafelnikov, who won 11 such victories in 1994.

Thanks to this victory, Medvedev advanced to the semi-finals of the ATP Final Tournament ahead of schedule; in the final round he will meet Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz.

The final ATP tournament takes place in Turin from November 12 to 19. The winner will earn more than $4.8 million. Last year, Serbian Novak Djokovic became the champion of the tournament.
