Russian tennis player Mirra Andreeva has made the greatest progress among her compatriots in 2023, says former world number nine Andrei Chesnokov.
16-year-old Andreeva reached the 1/8 finals of Wimbledon this season, repeating the record of Maria Sharapova, who was the only tennis player in the 21st century who managed to reach this stage of the tournament at the age of 17.
“Among our girls, Mirra Andreeva has made the greatest rise and progress this year. She started the season with a loss at the Junior Slam in Australia. And now she is already playing with all her might on the adult WTA tour. Next season she will be a difficult opponent for everyone without exception. Mirra has every chance to rise even higher in the rankings. There have been girls in the history of tennis who showed great results in such an early return. We expect that Mirra will continue to progress,” RB Sport quotes Chesnokov as saying.
Andreeva is ranked 46th in the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) rankings.
