Gilles Cervara, the coach of tennis player Daniil Medvedev, said that the Russian “shot himself in the foot” when he lost a game on his serve early in the third set in the semi-final match of the ATP final tournament with Italian Jannik Sinner.
The meeting took place on November 18. Medvedev lost to Sinner with a score of 3:6, 7:6 (7:4), 1:6.
— It was a very intense match. Yannick has been in amazing form in recent months, one of the three or four best players in the world. In the first set, Daniil had one bad game on his serve, when he gave it away with 40:0. With this he gave Sinner a set. When you lose a game like that, you’re shooting yourself in the foot.
At the same time, Medvedev played good tennis. In the second set, Danya was confident in his game and took it in earnest – I was pleased with the level of his play. But I didn’t expect him to lose the third set so easily. When you lose your serve immediately after leveling the set, you lose momentum. He shot himself in the foot again. Perhaps the reason is physics, plus he lost his head a little. But it’s the little details that make the difference in matches against the best players in the world,” Cervara told the Championship.
Medvedev finished the 2023 season in third place in the ATP rankings; during the season, the 27-year-old Russian won five titles.
