Gilles Cervara, coach of Russian tennis player Daniil Medvedev, explained why the athlete periodically experienced problems with his serve in 2023.
Last season, the 27-year-old Russian won five singles tournaments – in Rome, Miami, Dubai, Doha and Amsterdam.
— Problems with feeds are caused by several reasons. There is a technical side – movement, problems with tossing, which provoked errors. These are basic things. For example, sometimes after double mistakes I simply told him: “Daniel, you just didn’t push yourself forward, it’s a simple mistake.” It’s the simplest things that have let us down at times. Why? This is the other side of the issue – the mental one. Often he made double mistakes under the pressure of the score, the result.
At times, emotions provoked these mistakes. If you look back, he had big matches in the past where he also made double faults, but then he didn’t care. And this season it looked like this – after every match with a lot of double faults, he acted as if he had never made double faults before, he always served perfectly, and now he started serving crap, and it beat him down a little. At such moments, I told him: “Listen, in the past you also made mistakes, but then you didn’t bother about it. It’s the same as a bad bounce on clay,” Cervara told the Championship.
