Swiatek talks about his support for Ukraine and why he no longer wears the yellow-blue ribbon
The world’s first racket Iga Swiatek She repeatedly expressed her support for the warring Ukraine, spoke critically about the WTA’s lack of attention to issues related to the military occupation of our country, and also went to her matches with the yellow-dark blue for a long time. He had a ribbon on his hat.
But in recent tournaments the ribbon disappeared from his equipment and the Pole had to explain his decision.
“I think this ribbon was very helpful in the beginning when I wanted to show that I remained consistent in remembering the Ukrainians and what was happening there because public memory is, after all, very short.
But lately there has been so much negativity and so many comments judging me. People even said I wasn’t Polish. I think it started to evoke more negative emotions than positive reactions and we decided the ribbon was no longer a good idea.
But we still intend to support Ukraine and I believe this is the most important thing. Also, thanks to what has happened before – the ribbon-wearing and the charity match we organized in Krakow – I hope I have inspired the Poles to help. But frankly, there was no need to call, because we were really united as a nation and we did a lot,” the world’s best tennis player said in an interview with the Polish Super Express.
