Former Russian tennis player Mikhail Youzhny recalled the moment he smashed his head with a racket during a third-round match at a tournament in Miami in 2008.

Yuzhny held a meeting against the Spaniard Nicolas Almagro, which ended in the victory of the Russian with a score of 7:6 (7:4), 3:6, 7:6 (8:6). In the third set, Yuzhny smashed his head with several blows from his racket and started bleeding. Subsequently, a video of this moment became popular online.

– Of course, I’ve seen this video a hundred times, people show it to me all the time. What a lot of people don’t know is that I was very nervous from the start of that match. I don’t know why, but that day I was crazy. In the first set I was leading 4:0, then they made a break against me, and I threw my racket from the baseline onto the chair. After the first point in the next game, I broke the rules because I threw the ball out of the stadium. Obviously a lot of emotions, but it was a good lesson. And in the end I won the match! I overdid it, hitting my head with my racket, but I calmed down and after that I won seven points in a row. When I saw the blood, I fell silent. This moment turned the course of the match, at that moment my mentality changed,” Yuzhny Tennis Majors quotes.
