Russian tennis player Andrey Rublev earned 200 points and more than 150 thousand dollars for reaching the semifinals of the ATP 500 tournament in Dubai.
Last week, Rublev was disqualified for insulting a linesman during his semi-final match against Kazakhstan’s Alexander Bublik. In the third set, with the end of the rally, after which the score became 6:5 in favor of Bublik, Rublev shouted at the line referee. Another linesman, who was nearby, heard an insult to his colleague in the athlete’s Russian speech and immediately turned to the chief referee and supervisor.
According to the regulations of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), the Russian should have been deprived of all the points and prize money he earned at the tournament. However, in the version of the ATP ranking dated March 4, Rublev remained in fifth place.
— We considered Rublev’s appeal after his disqualification in the semi-finals of the ATP tournament in Dubai. We took into account the testimony of officials, the player himself, and also studied the available video and audio materials.
The Appeal Committee concluded that the loss of prize money and ranking points would have been disproportionate in this case. Thus, Rublev retains points for the semifinals and prize money for the tournament,” INews quotes an ATP representative as saying.
