Former world number one Andy Murray will not compete in the men’s singles at Wimbledon in London.

The athlete decided to withdraw from the tournament due to the consequences of a recent operation to remove a spinal cyst. Until the last minute, the Briton did not put an end to this issue, but was forced to withdraw from the game on Tuesday, the day of his first match in the tournament that had just started. In the first round, 37-year-old Murray was supposed to play against Czech Tomas Machac.

“Andy has made the very difficult decision not to play singles this year. As you can imagine, he is extremely disappointed. However, he confirms that he will be playing doubles at the tournament with (brother) Jamie,” Murray’s team said, as quoted by The Telegraph.

Murray is the only two-time Olympic champion in men’s singles in history. He also has three Grand Slam titles to his name: Wimbledon (2013, 2016) and the US Open (2012).

The 2024 Wimbledon tournament runs from July 1 to 14.
