Russian Tennis Has a New Superstar. Are We Expecting an Olympic Medal?

On Monday, Diana Schnyder will rise to 23rd place in the WTA rankings.
Tennis fans have not yet forgotten the bitter defeat of Diana Schneider in the third round of Wimbledon. Then the young Russian tennis player lost to the American Emma Navarro, and one of the reasons for the defeat was a wrist injury.
Fortunately, the injury was relatively minor. The injury will not prevent Schneider from playing at the Olympics in Paris. Moreover, this week Diana is taking part in the WTA-250 tournament in Budapest and is close to winning it.
In the semi-final, Diana played against the experienced German Eva Lis. At the moment, Diana is the 28th racket in the world, and her opponent is only 120th in the world ranking. Therefore, the Russian was considered the favorite of the semi-final match, and the obvious one.
Forward for a new title
And the 20-year-old Russian lived up to her status. She confidently won the first set 6:3. In the second set, the German put up some resistance, but in the end it was the same 6:3. Schneider won in 1 hour 25 minutes.
On Sunday, Diana Schneider will play the final match against Belarusian athlete Aliaksandra Sasnovich, who is ranked 134th in the world rankings. Diana has a great opportunity to win her third tournament of the season. Schneider previously won in Hua Hin, and before Wimbledon, she conquered the WTA-500 for the first time in Bad Homburg, Germany.
Five steps up
However, regardless of Sunday’s final, Diana will rise five places in the rankings and move to 23rd place. An enviable progress, because she started the calendar year only in 60th place.
Diana’s quick recovery and good play cannot but please in light of the Olympic tennis tournament. In Paris, Schneider will perform both in singles and in pairs with another young starlet Mirra Andreeva.
