Russian tennis player Elina Avanesyan announced that starting from the tournament in Cincinnati (USA) she will compete under the flag of Armenia.
In June, Armenian Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Karen Giloyan announced that the 21-year-old athlete, who was born in Pyatigorsk, would represent Armenia. The tournament in Cincinnati will be held from August 13 to 19.
“I am honored to announce that I have received Armenian citizenship and will proudly represent Armenia at the tournament in Cincinnati. This journey has been incredible and I am looking forward to showing myself on the court and playing for the homeland of my ancestors. Thank you all for your support,” Avanesyan wrote on social media.
Avanesyan is ranked 58th by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA). In July, she played in the final of a WTA tournament for the first time in her career, losing to Russian Mirra Andreeva in the Romanian city of Iasi.
