“I felt like I was in an Italian restaurant. The food was great. The aftertaste was great.” Medvedev on reaching the next round of the US Open

Russia’s number one tennis player Daniil Medvedev compared his victory over Hungary’s Fabian Marozsan in the second round of the US Open to a visit to a good Italian restaurant.

The Russian, seeded 5th, beat Marozsan 6:3, 6:2, 7:6 (7:5). The match lasted 2 hours and 7 minutes.

— About the match: I felt like I was in an Italian restaurant. The food was great. The aftertaste was great. But my head was heavy. The whole match I was thinking, “Try to concentrate, try to concentrate.” It was a funny feeling.

The one who loses gets a little more support to try to get back into the game. He started playing really well in the third set, so the fans supported him. Every time I won an important point, I said to myself, “Come on, just a little bit more.”

As a person, I am much calmer in life than on the court… I am someone who holds in my frustration. The difference is that in life, I can hold in my frustration for a month, two months, or even a year. It’s not so good because when it all comes out, it’s kind of a blow to everyone around them, and they have to run. But that’s rare.

Tennis is not easy. My coach told me that tennis brings out everything that is inside you, Medvedev said in an interview after the match.

Medvedev’s next opponent at the US Open will be Italian Flavio Cobolli (31st seed).
