The International Tennis Integrity Agency has disqualified and fined the captain of the Australian Davis Cup tennis team, Lleyton Hewitt, the organization’s press service reports.
Hewitt, 44, received a two-week disqualification and a fine of 30 thousand Australian dollars (about 17 thousand euros). He pushed a 60-year-old anti-doping volunteer after the semi-final match against Italy in November 2024. The Australians lost to the Italians with a score of 0:2 in matches.
Hewitt denied the charge, claiming he was provoked and acted in self-defence.
“The independent committee determined that the charge of offensive conduct stands because Hewitt’s actions did not meet the requirements of self-defense and Hewitt’s conduct was unreasonable and disproportionate,” the press release says.
During his career, Hewitt won 30 ATP singles tournaments, including two Grand Slam tournaments – US Open 2001 and Wimbledon 2002.
