(Ottawa) Prime Minister Mark Carney welcomed Canadian tennis star Victoria Mboko to Parliament Hill on Wednesday, telling the 19-year-old Torontonian that Canadians are proud of her exceptional season at the WTA.
Carney met with Mboko and his family at his West Block office.
He was able to admire the trophy she won this summer at the National Bank Open in Montreal.
The Prime Minister said the trophy symbolizes perseverance, resilience and immense talent.
He added that Mboko is an inspiring role model and that Canadians are proud of his accomplishments at such a young age.
After the Prime Minister’s speech, Mboko signed the racket used during his big victory at Stade IGA.
Carney, stunned, exclaimed “not true!” », adding that it will be highlighted.
Watching Carney swing the racket, Mboko said he could play with it, if he wanted. Carney laughed, admitting that his level of tennis wasn’t very good.
Mboko started season 350e to the world, then she concluded it on the 18e rank.
In addition to the National Bank Open (in August), she also triumphed at the Hong Kong Open in November.
