Alcaraz and Sinner ready to team up in doubles ‘at least once’

(Seoul) World No. 1 and 2 Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner said they were ready on Friday to team up one day to play a doubles match, with the Italian promising to discuss it again “this year or next year” with his great Spanish rival.

Gathered in Seoul on the eve of an exhibition which will pit them against each other, the two leaders of the men’s circuit together gave their first press conference of the season.

Asked about the possibility of one day seeing them form a doubles pair, the winners of the last eight Grand Slam singles tournaments did not close the door.

“I think it would be fun to share the court in a different way, playing on the same side at least for once,” said Sinner, who will try to win a third title in a row at the Australian Open at the end of January.

“Of course, the schedule” is dense “and we are so focused on singles that it is very difficult” to find time to play such a doubles match, he continued.

“When you go far in a singles tournament and then you have to play doubles, you can’t recover properly,” judged the Italian.

“But if it’s for just one tournament, that would be great. We’ll talk about it maybe this year, if we feel it at some point, or next year,” Sinner said.

The idea of playing doubles alongside his great rival crossed Alcaraz’s mind “once or twice”, said the Spaniard.

“It would be fun to make it happen at least once,” he continued, anticipating that he would then play on the forehand side and that Sinner would take care of the backhand side.

For the world No.1, who like Sinner will not play any preparation tournaments before the Australian Open (January 18-1er February), Saturday’s exhibition is “an excellent way to prepare” for the only Grand Slam tournament that is still missing from his list of achievements.

“Coming here (to South Korea, Editor’s note) for two, three days, continuing to prepare for the season that is starting, it was a great idea,” said Alcaraz, who separated in mid-December from his historic coach, the former world No.1 Juan Carlos Ferrero.

Milos Raonic says ‘the time has come’ to retire

Canadian Milos Raonic, a former Wimbledon finalist who has not played since 2024, announced his retirement from professional tennis on Sunday evening in a moving message posted on social media.

“The time has come, I am retiring from tennis. It’s a moment that you know is inevitable, but for which you never really feel ready, Raonic, 35, wrote on his Instagram page. Today, I will never be as happy. Tennis has been my passion, my obsession, for most of my life. »

Raonic, originally from Thornhill, Ontario, played his final match at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where he was eliminated in the first round by Germany’s Dominik Koepfer.

At his peak, he reached third place in the ATP men’s singles rankings. He has won eight ATP Tour titles and reached the final of the Wimbledon tournament in 2016, where he lost in three sets to Andy Murray.

He reached at least the quarterfinals in 10 Grand Slam main draws, posting an impressive 92-37 record in those major competitions.

“A large part of my tennis journey has been marked by the incredible encounters I have had the chance to meet all over the world,” Raonic wrote. And now ? I don’t plan on slowing down. Life is still long and I am as motivated and ambitious as in 2011, the year I broke through on the circuit. »

Raonic has become a true ambassador of Canadian tennis, establishing himself as one of the best servers of the modern era.

Injuries unfortunately cut his career short, and a shoulder injury sustained in 2025 never allowed him to fully recover and attempt a return to competition.

VIDEO. Sabalenka’s reaction to Kostyuk’s decision not to shake hands after the final

January 11 Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk She lost to world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final of the WTA 500 challenging tournament held in Brisbane, Australia.

After the meeting, Kostyuk did not shake Sabalenka’s hand – Ukrainian women have not shaken hands with their “neutral” rivals since the beginning of the large-scale war that Russia started on Ukrainian territory with the help of Belarus.

At the press conference, Sabalenka was asked to comment on Marta’s decision not to shake hands at the net:

“That’s their position. What can I do? I don’t care. I don’t care. When I go to the match, it’s just tennis and sports for me. On the court, I just think about my game and what I need to do to win.

I don’t care who is on that side of the net: Marta Kostyuk or Jessica Pegula. I go out on the field the same way and give everything I have to compete for the cup. I have nothing to prove to anyone. “I go out and compete like an athlete.”
