Vasiliev named Ovechkin and Andreeva the best Russian athletes of 2025
Two-time Olympic biathlon champion Dmitry Vasiliev, in a conversation with Match TV, named the best Russian athletes in 2025.
Last season, Alexander Ovechkin broke Wayne Gretzky’s record and became the best sniper in the history of the NHL regular season. Mirra Andreeva is the winner of three WTA tournaments in singles and two in doubles, Olympic silver medalist, semi-finalist at Roland Garros 2024.
— In first place, without any doubt, is Alexander Ovechkin, who set a record in the NHL. This is an achievement of global significance. This is the first place. In second place is Mirra Andreeva, a new discovery in world tennis. And in Russia, of course, it made a splash this year. On the third there may be several: both our swimmers and gymnasts. Some of them. I can’t single out anyone, but both of them are worthy,” Vasiliev told Match TV.
Currently, 40-year-old Ovechkin has 912 goals in the NHL regular season. Taking into account the playoffs, Ovechkin (989 goals) is second, behind only Gretzky (1016).
