(Hong Kong) Quebecer Gabriel Diallo started his new season brilliantly on Tuesday, winning 6-4, 7-6 (7) against Dutchman Jesper de Jong.
De Jong (71e) led 6-4 in the tiebreaker and gave himself three chances to force a decisive third set, but Diallo (40e) won three consecutive points to end the match in one hour 47 minutes.
Both men were very efficient with their first serve, as Diallo put it in play 83% of the time, compared to de Jong’s 81%. Diallo took advantage of the only break point of the match to take the lead in the first game of the match.
Diallo’s last match was in October. He will now face local favorite Coleman Wong (140e) in the second round, with a possible quarter-final duel against the Italian Lorenzo Musetti (seventh), first seed in this ATP 250 tournament.
