Medvedev simply smashed the American all over the court! Just one win away from the all-important title
The Russian gained confidence in his own abilities in time before the Australian Open.
Daniil Medvedev is in good shape ahead of the first Grand Slam tournament. In Brisbane, our tennis player has already reached the decisive match, showing truly champion tennis. The promising American could only break his racket in hysterics in the semifinals.
“I’m pleased with myself”
Medvedev arrived at the tournament in Brisbane as the main favorite, because he was seeded number one. After a certain improvement in results at the end of 2025, the Russian’s fans also looked at the Australian tournament with cautious optimism.
At the start, Daniil lived up to expectations, confidently dealing with two opponents. At first he met no resistance from Marton Fucsovics, and then confidently dealt with Francis Tiafoe. I had to suffer a little against Kamil Majchszak, but the Pole was defeated in three sets. Medvedev was pleased with his own performance, which allowed him to reach the landmark semi-final.
— I think it was a very high-quality match. To be honest, he’s in the top ten in terms of hitting. I’m happy with myself. “I managed to keep my cool and execute some great shots to win the match,” Medvedev was quoted as saying by the official ATP website.
Thanks to this victory, Daniil moved into clear second place among active tennis players in the number of appearances in the semi-finals of ATP tournaments on hard surfaces – 52 times. Novak Djokovic is beyond competition here (127 semi-finals of ATP tournaments).
American helplessness
In the semi-finals, Daniil had to play against the US representative Alex Mickelsen, in a match with whom he was considered a big favorite. But already in the second game, the American discouraged Medvedev by making a break.
True, Mickelsen’s success turned out to be short-lived. Medvedev, out of character, took four games in a row, making two breaks. In the rest of the first game, the Russian had no problems bringing it to victory – 6:4.
Daniil also confidently left the second set behind him, and his every action showed confidence. Our tennis player, if he did not show the game that allowed him to be the first racket of the world, was close to it. The helpless American could only throw his racket onto the court. It is natural that the game ended with the score 6:2.
In the final, Medvedev will play with another US representative, Brandan Nakashima. Regardless of the result of the decisive match, Daniil’s form gives rise to optimism ahead of the looming Australian Open.
