Djokovic on his 100th Australian Open win: “I like the sound of that”
Former world number one Novak Djokovic said he was proud to reach the 100-win mark at the Australian Open.
At the start of the competition, 38-year-old Djokovic, who received the fourth seed, beat the 71st racket of the world, Spaniard Pedro Martinez Portero, with a score of 6:3, 6:2, 6:2. The Serbian became the first tennis player in history to win 100 or more games at three different Grand Slam tournaments (100 – Australian Open, 101 – Roland Garros, 102 – Wimbledon).
– I’m glad to play in Australia again. For 20 years I have tried to give my all on the court and I thank all the fans for their support.
— For you, this is your 100th victory at the Australian Open.
– I like the sound of that. I always try to show my best. For me, every match is a big motivation. I strive to make history.
I’m lucky to be able to play at this level. Once again thank you all for your support. I understand that the end of my career is not far off. But I try not to dwell on it. And I’m just preparing for the next match, for the next tournament.
When I finish my career, then there will be time to sit on the beach and look back,” Djokovic said after the match.
