Tennis player Putintseva accused fans at the Australian Open of disrespect
Kazakh tennis player Yulia Putintseva said that fans behaved disrespectfully towards her during the third round match of the Australian Open against Zeynep Sönmez from Turkey.
Putintseva defeated Sönmez with a score of 6:3, 6:7 (3:7), 6:3. During the game, some spectators tried to interfere with the athlete from Kazakhstan, including when serving.
— There is always someone whom the fans support. This is the beauty of our sport. But today there were a lot of disrespectful moments when they shouted between my first and second serves. They didn’t shout very loudly, just to make me make a mistake. In the game, I think the score was 4:3, there was an important play, I had to take a forehand shot, and the guy just started coughing to stop me. I thought, “Okay, now I won’t lose.” Seriously. I was ready to take everything, fight to the last. Some have a tennis upbringing, some don’t,” The Tennis Letter quotes Putintseva.
Putintseva’s next opponent at the Australian Open will be American Iva Jovic, seeded 29th.
