In her 63rd appearance on the main board of the Grand Slam tournament, Alize Corne is in the quarterfinals of the major tournament for the first time after the great victory over Simona Halep.
The 32-year-old French prevailed after a thrilling two-and-a-half hour battle 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 former world No. 1 and qualified for the ‘8’ best at the Australian Open where he will meet Daniel Collins, who previously won 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 Elise Mertens.
The unbearable sun hampered the girls’ efforts early on Monday, with Corne being a bit more effective in the critical moments and achieving ultimate dominance.
The world No. 61 was twice ahead with a break in the deciding set of the match, Halep struggled to stay in the match without a morning. Corne failed to win 5-3, but scored her 6th break of the match in the next game and completed her triumph.
Aleppo was better in many individual stats, but Corne got the points and ticket to his first Grand Slam quarter-final.
